British tourists claim £2,400 easyJet holiday ruined by ‘cockroach infestation’ | Travel News | Travel

A British tourist was offered a £60 voucher after they claimed their easyJet holiday was ruined by a cockroach infestation. The family were on holiday in Paphos in Cyprus but their trip did not live up to expectations after cockroaches were found in their three-star hotel.

Stuart Wheeldon, 49, from Coleshill in the West Midlands, booked a seven-night self-catering stay for his wife and two daughters at the Basilica Holiday Resort through an easyJet package deal. The family had paid £2,400 for their holiday, reports Knews. “It just gives you a feeling of dirtiness,” said Wheeldon, who works as a tax analyst. “You don’t feel comfortable when you’re trying to sleep and things are crawling over you.”

The family said issues first began when they arrived at the hotel and were given the wrong accommodation.

They complained and were moved to another room when Wheeldon’s 13-year-old daughter first spotted the cockroaches.

The family changed rooms multiple times but there were still cockroaches, he says.

“I’d never seen a cockroach before this trip,” he said. “Rather than starting the holiday on a bad note, I tried to wash them down the plughole, but it didn’t stop.”

He claimed hotel staff told him the cockroaches are “everywhere” in the country. After complaining to easyJet, the holiday company offered him a £60 travel voucher.

In an email shared with the press, easyJet said that cockroaches can be common in warmer climates, adding that their presence “does not indicate a lack of hygiene,” but apologised for the distress caused.

An easyJet holidays spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear that Mr. Wheeldon was disappointed with his experience. We always want our customers to enjoy brilliant holidays, so we’re actively investigating his concerns with our resort partners.

“As soon as Mr. Wheeldon reached out to us, we arranged a room change for him and his family to help improve their stay. We’ve also been in direct contact to offer our sincere apologies, a partial refund and a gesture of goodwill.”
