British racing prospect, 18, speaks out after being diagnosed with brain and lung cancer | F1 | Sport

British racing prodigy William Macintyre has sent a message to his supporters after being diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. The teenager, who has been competing in the GB3 Championship this year, confirmed the sad news earlier this week. He also said that he would be stepping away from racing for the foreseeable future while he undergoes treatment.

The news has shocked the motorsport community, given Mcintyre’s young age and the severity of his diagnosis. His story has gained a huge amount of traction over the last few days with many high-profile figures wishing him well. His post on Instagram gained more than 48,000 likes in little over 24 hours, as well as hundreds of comments from people supporting him.

Mcintyre was taken aback by the level of encouragement he received and went on to issue a follow-up message via his Instagram story. He simply said: “Thank you all so much already for all the kind comments.”

Several racing drivers commented on his post to wish him the best in his recovery battle. Aston Martin junior Zak Crawford, who currently races in F2, said: “All the best mate,” alongside a praying hands emoji.

Pepe Marti, another F2 driver, wrote: “All the best Will, you’ll win this race and many more, we’re with you.” Lewis Hamilton’s brother Nicolas added: “You got this bro.”

Sky Sports commentator David Croft was also among the well-wishers, commenting: “Sending big love and positivity from Laura and I mate. Stay strong champ.”

Sebastian Montoya, Christian Mansell, Marta Garcia and Taylor Barnard were just some of the other drivers to comment on Macintyre’s post.

Revealing the news of his diagnosis, Macintyre said: “This is a very different post to usual, but I’ll just spit it out. Over the past few months, I haven’t quite felt myself and now it’s starting to make a bit more sense as to why.

“I’ve been diagnosed with both brain and lung cancer. Sadly, it’s as serious as it sounds! The amazing team at Milton Keynes Hospital have already been incredible in helping put a plan together for how I’m going to fight this.

“Unfortunately, this does mean I won’t be racing for the foreseeable future. But rest assured the second I’m able to, I’ll be back behind the wheel where I belong.

“A massive thank you goes to my family and friends for their support and to everyone who continues to back me through this unexpected detour.”
