A British teenager has reportedly been raped in the sea while on holiday in Greece. The 16-year-old girl was on holiday with her family in Rhodes when the alleged incident took place on Monday (July 21) on Ialysos beach, which was packed with other holidaymakers.
The girl went to the police with her father to report the incident, the Greek newspaper Dimokratiki reported. A 15-year-old boy from Belgium was arrested later that night. It is reported that both teenagers were staying at the same resort on the Greek island. The suspect has claimed their contact was consensual. The 15-year-old boy has since been brought before the Public Prosecutor on the island, who has referred the case to an investigating officer for further legal proceedings.
The teenagers reportedly formed a friendship during their stay.
The girl’s statement – given in the presence of a psychologist as required under Greek law – was described as “clear” with the minor insisting the acts – two assaults in the water – were carried out against her will.
Both the British and Belgian consular authorities have been informed, Dimokratiki reports.
