British Gas is writing to its older customers, encouraging them to go on benefits, as Labour’s plan to slash the winter fuel payment looms.
Under Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ plan, those not claiming pension credit will no longer be eligible for the winter fuel allowance. So now, British Gas is urging anyone who is eligible for the benefit to claim it, in order to protect their winter fuel payment.
Not only could this ensure many elderly Brits are able to afford their heating without worry, it could also severly eat into the savings the Treasury was hoping to receive by slashing the payment.
The gas company said it is “our responsibility” to provide assistance to customers.
The gas commpany will also restart its annual winter help scheme, which provides supports for struggling households.
Under the scheme, about £40m will go towards matching debt repayments and support grants.
British Gas has also increased the maximum grant it will give out, up from £1,500 to £2,000.
Chris O’Shea, chief executive of British Gas’ parent company Centrica, claimed that while some cost of living challenges had eased, the personal finance crisis is “far from over” for many households.
“At the end of each week or month there will be those that have little, if any, money left after paying for life’s essentials”, he said.
He added: “We are committed to ensuring that all pensioners are fully informed about their eligibility for pension credit, which can make a significant difference in their financial wellbeing.”
MailOnline reported that pensions minister Emma Reynolds said: “Pension credit is a vital benefit. Not only is it worth £3,900 a year on average, but it also acts as a gateway to other benefits.
“This means even just one pound could passport pensioners to extra help including help with council tax, housing benefit and the winter fuel payment.
“I support British Gas’ campaign to ensure all those who could be eligible are getting this help and urge all pensioners, and their friends and family, to check to see if they or their loved ones could be getting additional support via our online calculator.”
