Three dogs at the RSPCA Felledge Animal Centre are facing an uncertain future as they continue to wait for loving homes. Lurchers Rocket and Arti, along with Greyhound Minty, have been available for adoption since March but remain overlooked.
According to RSPCA research, Greyhounds are the fourth most overlooked breed, while Lurchers rank 13th. On average, dogs wait 41 days to be rehomed, but larger breeds often stay in kennels far longer. By contrast, small breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Cocker Spaniels typically find homes in just one to two weeks.
Rocket, only two years old, has spent a significant portion of her life in kennels due to complex legal proceedings. “She was only 10 weeks old when rescued, but the legal process meant she had to stay in kennels before she could be rehomed,” said Deputy Centre Manager Luka Atkinson.
“She absolutely loves people and is very friendly, but can get a little excitable when greeting visitors. She would thrive in a patient household, ideally with children aged 15 and over who have previous experience with dogs.”
Arti, another Lurcher, shares a similar story.
“He’s a sensitive boy who can sometimes be nervous around fast cars or busy roads,” said Luka.
“He’s made good progress with training, and he’s playful and affectionate once settled. A quiet street and an understanding family would be perfect for him, preferably with children aged 15 and above and prior dog experience.”
Minty, a Greyhound, has also been waiting patiently since March. While large breeds like Greyhounds and Lurchers are beloved for their gentle and loyal temperaments, they are among the most overlooked dogs in the UK.
“We don’t know exactly why Rocket and Arti have been overlooked,” said Luka.
“It could be due to their dark brindle colouring or simply that they need owners who understand their unique needs.
“They’ve grown up in kennels, so they’ll need patient families to help them navigate the world. We know the perfect owners are out there; we just haven’t found them yet.”
As part of its urgent Adoptober appeal, the RSPCA is calling on the public to help spread the word and consider giving these three deserving dogs the homes they have been waiting for.
“We’ve thrown everything we can at finding them a home,” Luka added. “We are keeping our fingers crossed this Adoptober that Rocket, Arti, and Minty finally find their forever families.”
