Bread will stay fresh longer if you stop making 1 mistake

Bread is an essential food item in every British household. From using it as a simple toast to coupling it with beans, avocado, and eggs, the bread can be used in several ways to make a perfect breakfast.

However, storing the bread correctly is an important step to maintain its shelf life. Storage experts have suggested avoiding making one common mistake to keep the bread fresh longer for days. Experts from Love Food Hate Waste say that storing bread in a refrigerator makes it “stale quicker”.

The experts stated: “Some people believe that bread should be stored in the fridge to help it last longer, but the reality is that this will actually make it go stale quicker.

“Keep your bread in a cool, dry place – like a bread bin or cupboard – and once you’ve opened it, re-tie it or fold the wrapper under the loaf to keep it fresh.”

The experts revealed that it is also essential to clean the cupboard regularly.

They said: “Don’t forget to clean your bread bin or cupboard regularly to make sure there aren’t mould spores floating around.”

According to the experts, the cold temperature causes the starch in bread to recrystallise, making it dry and tough much faster than if stored at room temperature.

Chef Dean Harper also warns that refrigeration dries out bread faster, making it hard and unpleasant to eat. Instead, he recommends freezing slices and defrosting only what you need.

He added: “Mould can send roots deeper than what you see, and this can cause health issues. It’s better to discard any mouldy bread to be safe.”
