Coffee is something that many of us simply cannot get through the day without. It provides a much-needed caffeine kick in the morning, and there are so many different ways that you can enjoy it.

However, black coffee is where a lot of people draw the line. It can taste very bitter without added milk or sugar, but black coffee can be a pretty healthy drink if it’s consumed in moderation. And you can actually improve its taste by adding just one pinch of a surprising ingredient.

The advice was shared on TikTok by health expert Dr Karan Rajan, who is no stranger to sharing his tips online. In a recent video, he outlined a few strange things you can do to make your favourite foods more nutritious or pleasant to eat.

And one of these is as simple as adding a pinch of salt to your black coffee.

He explained: “The salt blocks the bitterness receptors on your tongue, making the coffee taste way smoother and requiring less sugar.”

This was echoed by the coffee experts at Espresso Works, who say that salt can enhance the nutty flavors of some brews. It can also enhance a brew’s sweetness, making it less bitter and more mellow — even when sugar hasn’t been added.

Not only can it improve the taste, but it can also enhance the aroma of black coffee too.

Health benefits of black coffee

Drinking your coffee black can have a number of important health benefits. One of these is a potentially reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the long-term, according to Healthline.

It may also help to protect against certain neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Black coffee could also alter fat storage and support gut health, both of which may be helpful for weight management. It can also help heart health, with one study suggesting that drinking three to five cups of coffee per day was tied to a 15 percent reduced risk of heart disease.
