Temperatures are set to remain hot throughout the UK this weekend and people may be concerned about the smell of their bins. The warmer weather causes waste to decompose faster which leads to a more potent stench.
According to the Met Office, it will be “hot and humid” across the UK on Saturday (June 21) with “warm sunny spells” expected on Sunday and into next week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued an amber heat-health alert for the whole of England. It is in place until 9am on Sunday with temperatures set to exceed in 30C.
Waste management experts have issued advice for homeowners to ensure that their bins don’t smell in the hot weather. The hack costs just 65p and helps fight against bacteria that cause odour.
The experts at BusinessWaste.co.uk recommend adding bicarbonate of soda to the bottom of your bin ahead of the weekend heat. The alkaline helps to neutralise acidic substances that are released as food waste breaks down.
They said: “Doing this helps neutralise many bad smells. Bad bin odours are often caused by acidic substances released as food waste breaks down.”
They added: “Bicarbonate of soda is an alkaline, which helps counteract this, creating a chemical reaction that neutralises the odour. Bicarbonate of soda can also absorb ‘bin juice’ and other moisture that creates a less hospitable environment for bacteria that may contribute to bad smells.”
Homeowners are also advised to store their bin in a cool and dry place, out of the direct sunlight. This reduces the chance of bad smells developing as the decomposition of waste is slowed down.
Experts say it’s important to always keep the lid of your bin shut during the warm weather. This reduces the amount of oxygen that gets in your waste and prevents pests from getting inside.
Graham Matthews, waste management expert at BusinessWaste.co.uk, said: “Keeping your wheelie bin clean reduces bad smells, germs, and stops pests. While it might not be the most glamorous job, spending time cleaning your bins every couple of months is a great way to stop insects like flies and maggots from taking over.
“There are some simple storage and disposal hacks that will prevent smells and pests at the source. Correct food waste disposal helps keep your bin clean, but it also means you’ll be doing your bit for the environment.”
