Billy Joel fans are heartbroken after a series of increasingly frail performances culminated in the Piano Man singer’s decision to axe his tour entirely. The 76-year-old took to social media today to confirm that a brain disorder diagnosis has left him unable to continue.
The 76-year-old had previously lost his balance on stage in Connecticut in February, falling backwards onto the stage during a rendition of ‘It’s Still Rock and Rock To Me’. He had also been seen struggling to walk and using his microphone stand as a cane. Now the Express can reveal the reason for his recent erratic behaviour, which has sparked fears among fans.
It has been confirmed that he suffered a build-up of fluid on his brain, affecting his balance, hearing and vision.
He was subsequently diagnosed with the condition Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
According to Mayo Clinic, hydrocephalus refers to a buildup of fluid “enlarging the ventricles and putting pressure on brain tissue, potentially causing damage and neurological symptoms”.
An official statement confirmed that his recent concert performances have “exacerbated” his symptoms and that he has “been advised to refrain from performing” while he undergoes a “recovery period”.
