Fresh oysters are best enjoyed during any month that ends in “r”, which includes October – and this is just one reason why people should make their way to Whitstable. Having previously visited the charming seaside town in Kent on a beautiful summer’s day, there’s even more reason to go during the autumn.
While there is a boat-filled shingles beach to walk by and pretty oyster huts, where people guzzle down on mollusks, it’s the town’s impressive high street that deserves a bit more attention. Notable stops include the artisan bakery Grain and Hearth, and the Lauren Rogers-Martin art studio.
Inside the fine art illustrator’s chic studio is walls filled with abstract emotive paintings, bold embellished cushions and fragrant candles.
After shutting the doors to her studio throughout August and September, Lauren is planning to reopen her studio “for a limited Christmas pop-up” beginning from mid October (with dates yet to be confirmed).
Yet, all along the high street are independent boutiques and galleries to look inside – and plenty of food and drink offerings to whet your appetite.
One place worth booking ahead is the Whitstable Oyster Company, which won the Travellers’ Choice award for 2025.
The family-run restaurant has received great reviews, with one guest stating: “All the food was excellent. Great place to visit and will come back again.”
Another posted to Trip Advisor: “The beach location and rustic seaside charm bring a great atmosphere… it’s a little overpriced (e.g. £11 desserts) in my opinion.
“But I have had some very well cooked dishes there, and myself or my party have not been disappointed by the food.”
One more notable destination is the famed Wheelers Oyster Bar, the town’s oldest restaurant with a tiny oyster parlour and seafood bar.
