'Best sci-fi movie ever' that revived dying franchise now streaming free

A film hailed as ‘one of the greatest sci-fi horror films’ is now available for free streaming.

Prey, a part of the renowned Predator movie franchise, has recently been added to Channel 4’s ever-evolving library.

The title is currently among the many blockbuster films that viewers can enjoy at no additional cost.

Although it was previously available on the Disney+ platform, a premium subscription was required.

Released directly to streaming platforms in 2022 without a cinematic release, Prey is now considered the inaugural entry in the Predator movie timeline, despite being the fifth instalment released, excluding crossovers with the Alien franchise.

Set in the Great Plains in 1719, the plot revolves around Naru, portrayed by Amber Midthunder, a young Comanche woman striving to establish herself as a formidable warrior and hunter while an untamed Predator makes its first visit to Earth.

Naru finds herself compelled to defend her tribe from this extraterrestrial threat, whilst battling against the wilderness, dangerous colonisers and this enigmatic creature to safeguard her people, reports Surrey Live.

Given its setting in the 1700s, the film takes place approximately 300 years prior to the original Predator movie, which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of his early leading roles.

The film ‘Prey’ boasts an esteemed director in Dan Trachtenberg, known for his past works including ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, a ‘Black Mirror’ episode, and contributions to both ‘The Boys’ and the forthcoming ‘Stranger Things’ instalment, alongside his involvement with the ‘Predator’ animated feature. The movie garnered a remarkable 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and resonated significantly with fans.

Given its bold step as part of a venerated and enduring franchise, this achievement is particularly noteworthy.

A fan’s verdict read: “This is easily one of the best sci-fi horror films if not, the best, of a generation. Amber Midthunder is a captivating lead. This is the best in the entire Predator/Aliens Franchise since the original Alien and Predator films. I hope it opens the doors to its own sequel and possibly more historical periods where people face down the Predators.”

A different viewer stated: “An absolutely brilliant film that goes back to the roots of what made this franchise incredible. Prey has brought life back to the Predator franchise. I cannot express how excited and nostalgic this film was while watching.”

Even those previously unconvinced by the Predator series were swayed by its latest offering. One viewer enthused: “Easily one of the best-made movies recently and this is how a movie should be done. The visuals, soundtrack, story, tone, build up, and just about everything about this movie was phenomenal. I am not a huge fan of past Predator movies, but they have something incredibly special with this film.”

Another ardent fan went to the extent of proclaiming: “Best sci-fi movie ever. Have you come across a film where every scene is so detailed that gives you Goosebumps? If not then Prey should be your pick. Every hunt is a visual treat to the eyes. The storyline is mediocre, but the shots are so beautifully taken and edited that you forget about them.”

Prey is streaming on Channel 4 and Disney Plus.
