‘Best comedy film ever made’ now streaming on Apple TV

It has often been described as the perfect blend of wit, romance and Hollywood star power – and now the film widely regarded as the greatest comedy ever made is on Apple TV.

The title in question is The Philadelphia Story (1940), the George Cukor-directed romantic comedy that Rotten Tomatoes officially ranks as the No.1 comedy film of all time.

More than eight decades after its release, the screwball classic still holds a flawless 100% critics’ score alongside a 92% audience score.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus captures its enduring appeal: “Offering a wonderfully witty script, spotless direction from George Cukor, and typically excellent lead performances, The Philadelphia Story is an unqualified classic.”

At its heart, the film centres on Tracy Lord (played by Katharine Hepburn), a wealthy Philadelphia socialite preparing to marry a respectable but dull businessman.

Her plans unravel when her charismatic ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), turns up on the eve of the wedding.

To complicate matters further, an ambitious tabloid reporter, Macaulay Connor (James Stewart), arrives to cover the society nuptials. What follows is a tangled web of romantic missteps, witty exchanges and a sharp exploration of class and relationships – all wrapped up in the glamour of 1940s high society.

The chemistry between its three leads is a major reason for the film’s status as a classic. Hepburn, who had endured a career lull in the late 1930s, chose to adapt the story from Philip Barry’s stage play, which she had performed on Broadway to great acclaim.

The screen version not only revitalised her Hollywood career but also helped establish her reputation as one of the most formidable actresses of her generation.

Grant brings charm and mischievous sophistication to the role of the meddling ex-husband, while Stewart – cast slightly against type – won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as the cynical yet vulnerable journalist. The film itself received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

The Philadelphia Story (1940) is now available to watch on Apple TV.
