As an electric car expert and the founder of Electrifying.com, I drive every new EV that hits the market – and with over 130 now on sale in the UK, that’s a lot of charging cables!
But it also means a lot of choice. With electric cars now accounting for one in five new cars sold so far this year, here are five stand-out family EVs that have impressed me the most.
5. Volkswagen ID.Buzz
The ID.Buzz is the coolest electric family vehicle around – ignore anyone who tells you otherwise. Its retro design, the option of twin-tone paint and sliding rear doors make it stand out, while the massive boot makes it supremely practical. Powered by a 77kWh battery, it offers 258 miles of official range and it’s surprisingly easy to drive and park despite its size.
It’s not cheap, with a starting price of £59,135, but it’s more versatile than similarly priced SUVs, and feels wonderfully airy thanks to the high seating and panoramic glass. The Buzz delivers comfort, character and loads of space – a family EV like no other.

4. Skoda Elroq
The Skoda Elroq is a brilliantly rounded family EV. With battery options ranging from 52kWh (232 miles) to 77kWh (360 miles), and fast charging that adds 10–80% in 30 minutes, it’s built for long-haul ease.
Boot space is generous, and the thoughtful Skoda details – like cable storage net in the boot – are exactly what families need. The Elroq has been developed for comfort rather than sportiness, which comes as a welcome relief for anyone worried about the state of UK roads.
Starting from under £31,510 for the SE 50, it has ‘price parity’ with the petrol Karoq, so you can switch to electric without paying more.

3. MG S5
The MG S5 EV builds on the MG4’s strong foundations and offers big value. Priced from under £29,000, it gives 211 miles of range, or up to 298 miles if you opt for the £30,995 extended-range model.
It’s practical, too, with a spacious boot, plenty of rear seat space and now, finally, wireless Apple CarPlay! The upgraded cabin is far more premium than older MGs and includes proper buttons for key functions. It’s not a sporty drive, but the S5 is quick (0-62mph in 6.3 seconds), comfy and really easy to live with – a solid electric family SUV.

2. Kia EV3
The Kia EV3 is an electric family all-rounder. You can choose between a 55kWh or 78kWh battery offering 267- or 372 miles of range, with prices starting from £33,005.
It’s roomy, with a good size boot and generous rear legroom, and the cabin tech – lifted from the larger EV9 – includes twin 12.3-inch screens which are intuitive to use. It’s one of my favourite EVs to drive, and is stylish without being showy. It’s no wonder it scooped our Electrifying Car of the Year award and is the current holder of the title of World Car of the Year. For families looking to go electric without compromise, the EV3 is a real game-changer.
