A female British holidaymaker has been arrested in Benidorm after reportedly strangling a woman friend from the UK with a hoover lead during a row. A friend of the pair called the emergency services around midnight to beg for help.
Police rushed round to the apartment where the argument took place but it was too late and the victim was already dead by the time they arrived. The alleged killer is said to have confessed to the murder after she was taken away from the scene by cops. Local reports said the dead woman was found with the hoover cable still round her neck.
An initial post-mortem has confirmed she was strangled. It is not yet clear when the suspect, who has not been named, will be hauled before a judge.
A spokesman for National Police, confirming the arrest, said today: “A woman aged 64 has been arrest on suspicion of killing another 66-year-old woman, both from the UK. The investigation is ongoing and at the moment we can’t give out any more information.”
Benidorm is a very popular resort with holidaying Brits, attracting more than 600,000 UK holidaymakers last year.
The resort’s mayor Toni Pérez said the city is enjoying an “exponential increase” of visitors from Britain. The city is estimated to have some 138 hotels, the vast majority of which are three or four stars.
One of those is the Hotel Voramar, which was voted the “Best Hotel in Spain in 2024” by Tripadvisor users.
The four star establishment celebrated 60 years of business this year after opening its doors on April 9, 1965.
The hotel’s central location is one of its biggest draws, and is within a short walk of the beach, old town, restaurants and bars – with the marina also close by.
On receiving its award, the hotel said in a statement: “Receiving this award on our 60th anniversary is an immense honour and a tribute to all those who have been part of the history of Voramar: founders, workers, customers and collaborators.”
The hotel has received 1,420 reviews on the Tripadvisor platform and is rated as excellent by 1,221 people.
