10: Duke of York, Iddesleigh, Devon
The Duke of York in the small, edge-of-Dartmoor village of Iddesleigh has a unique place in recent history, reveals Adrian.
“Come in from the chill of an autumn’s day and warm yourself in front of a log fire in the deep old fireplace at this edge-of-Dartmoor village inn, where Michael Morpugo heard the stories that would inspire War Horse,” he says.
Now a novel, blockbuster stage show and graphic novels, the story Sir Michael heard that inspired War Horse must’ve been well worth the price of a couple of pints that day.
“The food was hearty, as was the beer, and you sat, as I did, imagining yourself immune from the miserable weather outside, while that feeling of being outside time and space when ensconced in a pub once more returned,” writes Adrian.
