Fancy an autumnal getaway? One of the UK’s most atmospheric cities could be your ideal destination. The expert team at Preply analysed some of the UK’s top city breaks last year to determine which location was the easiest to navigate on foot. While two southern cities came in first and second place on the top 10 list, another stunning destination came in third place.
According to the team’s research, York emerged as the UK’s third most walkable city, with its top five tourist attractions all within a 48-minute stroll. This walled city in northeastern England, founded by the ancient Romans, boasts a distinctive skyline dominated by the 13th-century Minster, as previously reported by the Express.
What to do in York
As one might expect from one of the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly cities, York offers a beautiful area for exploration on foot. The Shambles is one of the city’s most picturesque streets, brimming with boutiques waiting to be discovered.
It even served as inspiration for the famous Diagon Alley featured in Harry Potter.
TripAdvisor user ‘Iarke/Burgess’ commented: “What a beautiful, quaint place. This is full of charm and atmosphere. Lovely little shops with all sorts of goods.”
‘Happywanderer1960’ added: “Stunning street with fantastic stalls and shops with everything for everybody. All in all, fantastic shops and stalls.”
For chocolate enthusiasts, York has plenty to offer as it is the birthplace of some of the UK’s biggest brands.
Nowadays, a plethora of boutique shops offer chocolate delights, and tourists will be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a cosy cafe for a warming hot chocolate.
A visit to the National Railway Museum or a tour of the historic York Minster is a must for any tourist. The York Castle Museum provides a fascinating peek into history with an array of family-friendly activities.
York is less than two hours from London and is also easily accessible from Edinburgh. The city is just a brief journey away from Leeds.
