Beautiful UK beach away from crowds where millionaire views are free | UK | Travel

Meadfoot Beach could arguably be considered the best beach in Torquay, attracting tourists and locals alike. Often referred to as the jewel of Torquay’s English Riviera, the beach boasts shimmering blue waters and a sandy shore like a dreamy place visited on a holiday thousands of miles away.

Serving as the perfect alternative for those seeking a quieter retreat from the bustling tourist hotspots, this quintessentially English spot offers stunning shoreline views, a cafe selling delicious food and plenty of rock pools to explore. A few decades ago, the town’s wealthy elite secured the prime hilltop location of Torquay’s most exclusive neighbourhood, Illsham Marine Drive, and their homes now offer breathtaking sea views. But affluence isn’t a prerequisite for renting one of the charming beach huts that line the foot of the rocky cliffs in a neat crescent.

Local resident Aaron Jennians, who grew up in the area, spoke to Devon Live, saying: “I still visit here maybe once a week. I believe it’s the best beach in Torquay.”

“This entire area is fantastic for cliff walks and relaxation,” he said, gesturing across the expansive bay towards Thatcher Rock at one end and Berry Head in Brixham at the other.

“Sometimes I camp out, and waking up to this stunning view is the best feeling.”

Nestled at the base of cliffs – and with a convenient car park nearby – the beach is is mainly sandy with some shingle areas.

Awarded a Blue Flag for its water quality and safety, the picturesque view of sea swimmers, yachts, RIBs, and other watercraft can be enjoyed from the comfort of the local cafe which sits on the tiny prom, serviced by friendly staff.

The menu offers coffee, cakes, snacks and freshly prepared food at reasonably prices – including ham and tomato baguettes, prawns with Marie-Rose sauce, chicken burger and chips and a posh fish finger sandwich.

Among the fortunate ones to rent a beach hut are Liz and Stephen Guy. For £1,800 annually, they enjoy a prime location and a kitchen-style unit above the shore.

It’s their perfect spot to unwind, socialise, and watch the sun’s journey across the sky.

Stephen recently returned from Weymouth in Dorset, another renowned English resort town. He firmly believes Torquay outshines it, saying: “People in Weymouth were telling me what a great place it was and some of it around the harbour is nice but there’s no comparison with here. It is amazing. Come to Torquay any day of the week. Don’t go to Dorset go to Torquay!”

Liz shares his enthusiasm: “I just think it is fantastic.

“When you tell people about Torquay they sort of say ‘Oh Torquay, really?’, but it is an extraordinary place. There is a great beach here, lovely cafe, it’s safe and has all the natural beauty you want. What’s not to like?”

It’s certainly hard not to agree with her when taking in the gorgeous view of sparkling azure waters while tucking into some freshly made chips.
