While the UK is currently experiencing cold weather, many European destinations are basking in much warmer conditions and enjoying plenty of sunshine.
Fortunately, if you’re craving some winter sun, there are numerous destinations available that won’t necessarily empty your wallet.
Mainland Spain might be typically associated with summer holidays, with the Canary Islands being the preferred choice for winter getaways.
However, several southern Spanish cities can still be pretty warm even at this time of year.
For instance, the coastal city of Malaga can boast highs of 20C in February – significantly warmer than what we can expect to see here in the UK.
Situated on the renowned Costa del Sol, it also benefits from plenty of sunshine. However, evenings can still be a bit cool, so packing a jacket would be wise, reports the Manchester Evening News.
According to Skyscanner, one-way flights from the likes of Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool and Luton to Malaga in February start from as low as £15, with return fares similarly priced.
However, this doesn’t include seat allocation or baggage.
Malaga boasts an impressive 16 beaches, with La Malagueta, La Misericordia, El Palo or Pedregalejo among the most popular. While water temperatures may be a tad chilly in February, the city has a wealth of other attractions, making it an ideal destination for a winter sun city break.
The city is steeped in history and culture. Take time to marvel at the Moorish fortress of Alczaba, an 11th-century architectural gem adorned with stunning courtyards, gardens and terraces.
Nestled at the base of the fortress is Malaga’s Roman theatre, unearthed in 1951 after being concealed underground for centuries.
It was operational until the third century AD, with some of its structure repurposed by Moorish settlers to construct the fortress.
For those up for a challenge, ascend to Castillo de Gibralfaro, perched high above the city, offering breathtaking views of Malaga. Dating back to the 14th century, it also hosts a military museum.
Malaga takes pride in being the birthplace of world-renowned painter Pablo Picasso. Art enthusiasts will love a visit to the Picasso museum, home to over 200 pieces spanning most of his career.
And naturally, no trip to Spain would be complete without indulging in tapas. The region of Andalusia serves up some of the finest tapas, with a particular focus on seafood.
