Beautiful seaside town is the ‘chippy capital’ of the UK | Travel News | Travel

As the summer season approaches, numerous Brits are planning their holidays. However, there’s no need to venture overseas for a splendid coastal retreat, reports the Mirror.

This is because the UK not only boasts some of the most picturesque seaside towns globally, but it also lays claim to the world’s top coastal delicacy, fish and chips. And one location stands out as a champion of this delicious, deep-fried delight. Scarborough, the delightful seaside resort in North Yorkshire is renowned for its dramatic coastline, offering breathtaking views across the North Sea, and its fondness for the chippy tea.

The Yorkshire town has 85.35 chip shops per 100,000 residents, meaning it has the highest concentration of fryers in the country – comfortably beating East Lindsey with its 62.23/100,000 into second place. This is according to a study by Suomikasinot.

This traditional seaside town has long attracted visitors with its harbour views, sandy beaches and passion for proper fish and chips. With fresh North Sea catch readily available and plenty of peckish tourists, Scarborough has a chip shop for nearly every 1,200 residents.

But it has much more to offer. The town is nestled near the North York Moors National Park and features towering cliffs, sandy shores, and Scarborough Castle, majestically perched on a headland overlooking the waters.

In 2023, Time Out magazine named it amongst Britain’s best places to visit. CN Traveller has also crowned it the “most beautiful seaside resort in England” thanks to its fascinating heritage.

The publication wrote: “The dramatic castle occupies the headland which separates the two main bays – steep cliffs stretching away in both directions. The old town ascends the slope to the castle in a maze of crooked streets, with buildings dating back to Tudor times.”

What sets Scarborough apart are the unique experiences available while soaking up the stunning views.

An unmissable destination is the vibrant Scarborough Fair Collection, which boasts Europe’s largest selection of vintage rides and transport.

This venue provides not only a remarkable glimpse into the past but also features bumper cars, fruit machines, a merry-go-round and the chance to enjoy afternoon tea alongside a theatrical show.

Scarborough’s Rotunda Museum represents an absolute must-visit, taking visitors on an extraordinary voyage through 65 million years with its remarkable fossil collection, dinosaur tracks and even a complete Speeton Plesiosaur skeleton.

Admission costs nothing for those under 18 and just £5 for grown-ups, which also covers entry to the Scarborough Art Gallery.

However, no coastal getaway would be truly complete without experiencing the shoreline, and Scarborough features two magnificent beaches – North and South Bay. South Bay Beach is a fantastic spot for a family day out.

A favourite since the Victorian era, it continues to charm with its traditional donkey rides and lively promenade teeming with activities. In contrast, North Bay Beach offers a tranquil retreat, ideal for unwinding or a gentle walk.

With its rock pools and quaint vintage beach huts nestled against a backdrop of stunning hills and cliffs, it’s a photographer’s paradise.

The two beaches are divided by the remnants of the majestic Scarborough Castle. This 12th-century fortress has endured Viking invasions and served as a key royalist stronghold during the Civil War.

After a day of discovery, a visit to the Scarborough Castle Great Tea Room is essential. It boasts awe-inspiring views of both beaches and serves homemade cakes, jams, and other comforting delights.
