Dr Oscar Duke, the resident doctor on BBC Morning Live, has revealed an inexpensive kitchen ingredient that may alleviate symptoms of covid, colds, and flu. The best part is that his suggested remedy means you won’t have to hurry to the pharmacy for costly over-the-counter medications.
October marks the season when viruses start to spread quickly as people tend to stay indoors in humid environments, which are ideal for germs to grow. Alongside the typical cold and flu viruses, this month also sees the emergence of new covid strains, namely Stratus (XFG) and Nimbus (NB.1.8. 1).
Although many symptoms of Stratus are similar to those of other strains, two symptoms are particularly linked to it: a hoarse or raspy voice and feelings of fatigue.
In the meantime, typical symptoms linked to the Nimbus include an extremely painful sore throat, often referred to as a “razor-blade feeling,” along with trouble swallowing, tiredness, and digestive issues like nausea and bloating. Some reports indicate that Nimbus is especially contagious, according to the Mirror.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that many symptoms for both strains resemble those of other variants and the common cold, including coughing, sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, fever or chills, headaches, muscle pains, and digestive problems.
If you think you have covid, you should:

What 2p solution does Dr Duke recommend?
Considering that a sore throat is a frequent symptom of COVID-19, including the newest variants, as well as the common cold and flu, one specific kitchen item may provide some relief. Dr. Oscar Duke previously shared insights on BBC Morning Live with hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton about combating seasonal illnesses using an ingredient that you likely already have in your kitchen.
While discussing the benefits of table salt, Dr Duke noted that mixing it with water could offer ‘instant relief’. The health expert began by reminding viewers that there is no magical solution for the viruses that cause common colds – only relief from symptoms is available.
“Most treatments focus on easing discomfort as the virus runs its course,” he explained. “It is crucial to understand that current remedies do not eliminate the virus but may assist in symptom relief.” But he then revealed: “Saltwater drops can reduce symptom duration by about two days.”
How to use the 2p solution?
When explaining how to make homemade saltwater, he suggests putting three teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate into a bowl of cooled boiled water.
“One teaspoon of this mixture can be combined with 250 ml of water, which is about a cup,” he outlined. “The remedy can be given using a spray, dropper, or even by inhaling it from the palm to help dissolve secretions.”
Most supermarkets sell table salt for pennies, with Aldi selling a 750g bottle for just 65p, which is 1p per 10 grams. One teaspoon of salt weighs around six grams. Dr Oscar recommends using three teaspoons of salt, which works out to a little under 2p.
What does research show?
Dr Duke cited a recent study that revealed the science behind saltwater’s advantages. He said: “A recent study conducted in Edinburgh involved around 400 children to investigate the effects of saltwater drops on cold symptoms.
“The study found that using saltwater drops could reduce the duration of symptoms by approximately two days. However, it is important to note that the virus itself is likely still present. What other solutions are there?
In addition to saltwater, Dr Duke recommends honey, which is cited in national guidelines as a potential remedy for cold symptoms. Research has found that a nightly dose of honey can alleviate symptoms and it can also be stirred into hot drinks.
The BBC doctor also stated: “Chicken soup has also been the subject of considerable research. Studies suggest it may aid in clearing mucus from the respiratory airways. Homemade chicken soup is believed to be more effective than store-bought versions.”
Consuming wholesome foods like chicken soup can be one of the most beneficial strategies for combating cold symptoms. Research indicates that chicken soup may decrease the migration of neutrophils, a kind of white blood cell associated with inflammation, to the upper respiratory tract.
The protein found in chicken offers amino acids, such as cysteine. This particular amino acid shares a chemical resemblance with a medication that helps eliminate mucus and can enhance immune function. Numerous recipes feature garlic and ginger, both of which possess natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Additionally, some individuals incorporate turmeric or cayenne pepper, which may boost mucus flow to alleviate congestion.
