Have you ever wondered how  hotel bathrooms always smell so fresh and clean, despite the fact so many guests use them?

Apparently there’s a clever cleaning hack that housekeeping teams swear by, and you can try it at home for that five-star freshness.

It’s not just down to high-end cleaning products either, hotels battle stubborn odours by treating them at source.

According to the experts at Plumbworld, a two-step method of deep cleaning and scent layering is exactly what is needed to keep things fresher for longer.

If you’re pining for a five star loo, here’s how you can transform your bathroom into a fragrant oasis in your own home.

Bathrooms are notorious for harbouring odours due to trapped moisture, poor ventilation and hidden grime that mounts up after time.

Biofilm, a slimy layer of bacteria, builds up in hard-to-reach areas like under the toilet rim, inside drains and around the base of fixtures, allowing unpleasant smells to linger.

Professional cleaners follow two very distinct steps to not only thoroughly clean the areas in and around the toilet, they have also worked out the optimum way to keep odours at bay.

Here’s how they do it:

1. Deep cleaning

A deep clean means getting into all areas of the toilet, and not just a quick wipe around under the seat.

For example, the toilet tank itself is often the source of unpleasant smells, but by dropping in a denture-cleaning tablet or white vinegar weekly can help eliminate bacteria and mineral build-up.

Bathroom drains and grout can also harbour bacteria and stinky odours. Use an enzyme-based cleaners or a mix of baking soda, vinegar and hot water to clean drains.

You scan also scrub grout with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to keep the toilet area looking and smelling nice and fresh.

2. Scent layering

Hotels don’t just mask odours; they create a subtle, inviting aroma by adding essential oils to hidden spots like inside toilet paper rolls or behind the sink.

They also add fragranced accessories such as toilet rim blocks and scented brushes, as well as neutralising absorbents like baking soda or activated charcoal to eliminate moisture and odours.

It is by combining deep cleaning with thoughtful scent layering that hotels are able to maintain a clean, luxurious atmosphere without relying on overpowering air fresheners.

Not only does this approach keep odours at bay, but it also enhances hygiene and you can easily receate it for yourself in your own home for five-star freshness in your loo.
