Banish pesky fruit flies for good with 3 homemade solutions

According to Jonathan Nicholls at HomeHow.co.uk, in order to tackle a fruit fly infestation, it’s important to understand the fruit fly life cycle. Adult fruit flies are attracted to fermented foods, and the female flies then lay hundreds of eggs on the surface of these items, which hatch into larvae within just a day.

The rapid reproductive cycle means that, if not addressed as soon as possible, an infestation “can get out of hand in no time”. Luckily, there are solutions to try, according to the expert.

The expert recommended using homemade traps, which can be made with common household items.

1. Apple cider vinegar

The expert said: “Start by pouring a small amount of apple cider vinegar into a bowl or jar before covering it with cling film and poking small holes in the top.

“The sweet aroma through the small holes will attract the flies, while the cling film will trap them inside.”

2. Wine or beer

Similar to the vinegar trap, pour a small amount of wine or beer into a container.

The strong scent of the liquid will lure the flies in, causing them to fall into the trap and drown.

3. Soap and water

The expert said: “This trick is as simple as mixing water with a few drops of dish soap in a bowl.

“The soap will break the surface tension of the water, making it difficult for the flies to escape once they land.”

Other ways to get rid of the pests include thoroughly cleaning your home by removing overripe fruits or vegetables.

Then, wipe down surfaces, especially where food crumbs may accumulate, such as tables and countertops.

Then, don’t forget to deep clean the sink too, as food particles can often hide in the drain, providing a haven for fruit flies.

The expert also recommended sealing entry points. He noted: “Ensure that your windows and doors are in good condition, and consider installing draught excluders.

“Regularly check and seal any gaps that could allow these small invaders access to your home.”
