The first person who is missing and thought to have died in the Baltimore bridge collapse has been named.
Miguel Luna, 49 years old from El Salvador, was one of the people on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it fell after being hit by the container ship the Dali.
Six workers were fixing potholes in the bridge for Brawner Builders – it’s thought all of them have tragically died in the horrific incident.
Miguel Luna’s wife, Maria del Carmen Castellon, spoke to Telemundo 44 in Spanish. She said: “They only tell us that we have to wait, that for now, they can’t give us information,” earlier in the day.
“[We feel] devastated, devastated because our heart is broken because we don’t know if they’ve rescued them yet. We’re just waiting to hear any news.”
Jeffrey Pritzker, who helps lead Brawner Builders, said the team was working in the middle of the bridge when it was hit by the ship.
He also said that one worker made it out alive. On Tuesday morning, a call came over the Maryland Transportation Authority’s first responder radio. A ship had lost its steering ability and officers were asked to stop all traffic.
It took less than two minutes for officers to halt traffic on the bridge.
An officer who had stopped traffic said he would drive onto the bridge to tell the construction crew. But then, an officer radioed in a panic that the bridge had collapsed.
The six people still missing were part of the construction crew. They were filling potholes on the bridge.
