A beautiful lookout point on the sizzling Spanish island of Majorca has been hit by a plague of litter, including condoms and sanitary products attached to fencing by some visitors.

Padlocks and similar paraphernalia are not uncommon on some landmarks across the world, often signifying an unbreakable bond between loved ones.

But dismayed tourists have been greeted by some decidely less wholesome keepsakes some people have chosen to leave on the railings at the Es Colomer viewpoint, which looks out over the stunning Cap de Formentor.

The Formentor is a huge Gibraltar-esq rock rising 1,260 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. It marks the most northerly point on Majorca.

Those looking to mark their visit with a selfie or photograph now have to take into account what else might be appearing in the background on the fencing.

Recent visitor Bartolomé Seguí, a cartoonist and illustrator, shared some images of the more unusual offerings being left behind at the beauty spot.

Sharing the images on X, he wrote: “I haven’t been up to the Es Colomer viewpoint for years, most of the year it’s full of tourists.

“Sad to see the adaptation to receive masses of people, and disgusting the mania of wanting to leave our mark on everything. No locks here, just diapers, condoms and trash.”

Mr Seguí shared his photographs, which show a dizzying array of detritus left on the railings, with Express.co.uk and added that he hoped posting the images “highlights the unfortunate issue of the damage caused by these visitors’ ‘hobbies’ to such a special place”.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports a viewpoint at Costa dels Pinns on the island was plagued by padlocks for years before hundreds were removed by the local authorities in 2016.

Elsewhere in the world, tourists carrying out bizarre rituals at famous locations have also caused problems.

In the city of Verona in Italy, there is a statue of Juliet under a balcony of a home local legend has it was the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

But fans of the iconic romantic play caused damage to the bronze statue eventually opening a hole in Juliet’s right breast because so many visitors rubbed it for good luck. Authorities spent £12,800 on a new replica statue, with the old one taken to a new location away from fondling tourists.
