Mia McKenna-Bruce has admitted that she is yet to ‘get back’ her BAFTA Rising Star Award almost one year on from her win. The English actress was voted the winner of the prestigious award last year.

The category, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has previously seen the likes of Lashana Lynch, Tom Holland, Will Poulter, Juno Temple and Tom Hardy pick up the award.

Speaking exclusively to Express Online and other media outlets, Mia had the honor to announce this year’s nominees and spoke about what life has been like a year after her incredible win.

When asked where she keeps her award, she replied: “Mine’s at my mum and dad’s house. I’m yet to get it back.

“It changes your life, because it’s just got me in so many more rooms and given me more of a voice, I think, in the industry, which is really, really exciting. It just creates new opportunities.”

When asked about the range of nominees this year, Mia said: “There’s so many different kinds of films, so many different kinds of actors, not one big movie dominating, so yeah, kind of like delighted by that.”

Last year, Mia was nominated for the EE Rising Star Award for her break-out performance in How To Have Sex. The 27 year old was nominated alongside Phoebe Dynevor, Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi and Sophie Wilde.

The award is the only BAFTA category that chooses its winner through a public vote. Speaking about her win last year to the BBC, Mia expressed that is was a “complete surprise.”

The 2025 nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards saw films such as Conclave, Emilia Perez and The Brutalist leading the race, with Conclave receiving 12 nods and Emilia Perez getting 11.

Wicked, Anora, and Dune: Part Two landed seven nominations, whilst A Complete Unknown and Kneecap were given six nods. Nosferatu and The Substance closely followed with five nominations.

Meanwhile, Denzel Washington was snubbed after his acclaimed performance in Gladiator II didn’t land him a nod in the Best Actor category.

Luca Guadagnino’s films, Queer and Challengers, both had Golden Globe nominations but failed to be recognised in the BAFTA shortlist.

Likewise, Nicole Kidman was also left out despite being nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Babygirl.

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards takes place on Sunday 16 February.
