Bacon sandwiches will ‘taste better’ if you add 1 ingredient

Lots of people love tucking in to a bacon sandwich every now and then. After all, they’re tasty, delicious and feel like a proper treat when you’re in the mood for something a little more tempting.

However, many disagree on what makes the perfect bacon sandwich, and now a famous chef has thrown another spanner in the works. TV chef Marco Pierre White says he thinks one simple ingredient takes the dish to the next level and, if his cooking advice is anything to go by, you may want to stay away from the ketchup from now on when you’re making sandwiches.

Previously speaking on the Desert Island Dishes podcast, he admitted he’s learnt what it takes to make the perfect bacon sandwich. After visiting a farm shop, he said he picked up on a trick that is seriously good for food lovers.

He said: “There’s a farm shop down the road in Burton, and it’s very nice. I just have normal bacon sandwiches, but the time before I’d went, I’d had lunch and they gave me these very nice sun-dried tomatoes with my salumi.

“‘Can I have a bacon sandwich please, but can I have it with some of your nice sun-dried tomatoes?’ And, I’m not joking, a bacon sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes where they’ve had the chill removed from them – don’t leave them in the fridge – with HP. The combination of HP sauce with sun-dried tomatoes and deliciously salty bacon.”

He admitted the dish is “really good”, and says it’s well worth a try to take your sandwiches up a gear. Based on the comments, it seems that many other people agree too.

One person replied, saying: “He’s a culinary genius.” Another added: “Any step up to the classic bacon sandwich will have to be sampled. If Marco says it then I’m trying it.”

A third wrote: “I know I’m going to try this.” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “He absolutely is a food hero.”

Someone else also chimed in with: “The magnificent chef. Also taught Mr Ramsay the way to be the top chef that he is today. Two legends of the chef world.”

Marco has clearly got a lot of food fans excited by the idea of adding sun-dried tomatoes. Several seem super keen to try it.

What are sun-dried tomatoes?

If you’ve never heard of them, sun-dried tomatoes are tomatoes that have been dehydrated – either naturally by the sun or artificially. Basically, they have had their mosisture removed.

This process concentrates their flavour, making them sweeter and more intense than fresh tomatoes. It also works to offer them a chewy texture.

Normally, they are preserved in olive oil and used in a variety of dishes. They offer a sweet and tangy tomato flavour.

They are quite chewy, so work to add both flavour and texture to dishes. They are typically added to dishes such as salads, pastas and soups.

Sun-dried tomatoes can be used in all sorts of ways, so it’s worth trying them out. They could just take your bacon sandwiches to the next level.
