Baby formula recalled over bacteria contamination could lead to life-threatening sepsis

Reckitt is recalling two baby formulas due to the possible presence of Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.

The FSA said Cronobacter sakazakii can lead to fever and diarrhoea, and in severe cases may lead to life-threatening sepsis or meningitis.

Symptoms in infants include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes) and abnormal breaths and movements.

Anybody concerned about the health of their baby is urged to seek medical advivce.

The “precautionary” recall comes after an “isolated overseas sample of the product testing positive for Cronobacter sakazakii”, said Reckitt.

There is an ongoing thorough investigation while Reckitt is asking customers to please return affected products to the place of purchase.

All stores and pharmacies supplying Nutramigen LGG Stage 1 Hypoallergenic Formula and Nutramigen LGG Stage 2 Hypoallergenic Formula have been notified.

These products are “foods used for special medical purposes for infants”, said the FSA.

They are “mainly prescribed, but are also available without a prescription”.
