Avoid ‘common mistake’ when watering peace lilies or risk killing houseplant for good

While peace lilies are considered to be low maintenance, it is important to water this houseplant correctly.

This means avoiding tap water where possible, and opting for rainwater or filtered to hydrate them.

The experts at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) said: “They prefer rainwater to rap water.

“The roots can rot if the compost is damp for long periods, so take care not to overwater.

“Plants can droop dramatically when they need watering, but soon perk up after a good drink.”

Owners must also make sure to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and improve photosynthesis.

According to Natalie Devereux, product specialist at Serenata Flowers, using tap water to water peace lilies is a “common mistake”.

She added: “Peace lilies don’t like being overwatered, so don’t water on a schedule as it is likely they will need less in the winter than the summer when the external conditions are warmer.

“Overwatering can lead to root rot which suffocates the plant.

“Where possible, use filtered water and avoid tap water which can contain fluoride, which peace lilies are sensitive to.

“In winter, bring the water to room temperature before watering as water too cold can shock the plants.”

To correctly water a peace lily, make sure the top couple inches of soil are completely dry before going in with water.

This can be done using a pencil or gently sticking your finger into the soil.

If the leaves are drooping and turning yellow, hold back on the watering as this is a sign it has been overwatered.

In the winter, they need much less hydration than in the summer months so make sure to water little and often.

The RHS added: “Very dry air can cause leaf browning so mist plants regularly or stand them on a tray of damp gravel, and keep them away from hot radiators and cold draughts.”

When misting plants, use tepid water to spray and liberally spray the peace lily to replicate the humid air of the rainforest.
