Avocado on toast is the perfect breakfast when you want something delicious and healthy, but it can be disappointing if it tastes bland. Avocados have a very subtle flavour, and it is incredibly important to season them properly to bring out the taste.

Kathryne Taylor, a cook and founder of Cookie and Kate, has shared that the key to making avocados tastier is always adding a little bit of salt. She said, “You’ll want to mix in at least a pinch of salt per avocado half. Bonus points? Finish your avocado toast with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt.”

It may seem simple, but avocados are very mild and can even have a slightly bitter taste if they are not perfectly ripe.

Salt can bring out the natural richer flavours in avocados, making them butterier and creamier and even more satisfying, so you have a much tastier breakfast.

Adding just a sprinkle of salt can also improve the texture of mashed-up avocados, as it becomes smoother, so it is much easier to spread if you are making avocado on toast.

How to greatly improve avocado on toast

Avocado on toast is a straightforward dish, but there are a few easy ways to amplify the flavours for a more appetising breakfast.

The type of bread you use is down to personal preference, but whole grain tends to be better, and it brings out a nuttier flavour in the avocado and also adds more fibre to your meal.

Kathryne said: “I think sturdy, thick-sliced, whole grain bread makes the best avocado toast. Golden, well-toasted bread offers a sturdy base and a crisp, shattering contrast against the creamy avocado.”

Once you have toasted your bread, make sure to mash your avocado slices before putting them on it. Mashing them onto the toast risks tearing the bread or creating a big hole in it.

Instead, cut an avocado in half, remove the pit and scoop the flesh into a bowl to mash. If you can, use a potato masher instead of a fork to make mashing easier.

Now, you will want to sprinkle a little salt (around one-eighth of a teaspoon) into your mashed avocado and sprinkle it on the toast.

Other simple ways to improve avocado on toast is to rub raw garlic on the toast before adding the avocado or add some fresh chopped herbs (basil, dill, parsley) to the dish.

Some people also enjoy adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to mashed avocado to add more tanginess, and it is also a great way to stop avocados from browning if you have a slice left over.

Adding an egg on top is also a delicious way to improve avocados on toast so you will have a mouthwatering breakfast that is still extremely healthy.

Kate said: “I love to top my avocado toast with a fried egg for extra protein. You can do a poached egg or scrambled egg if you prefer.”
