Whether it’s on toast in a morning, accompanying your eggs, tossed into a delicious salad, used for guacomole, or added onto your plate for dinner, avocado is a popular and healthy treat to add to any meal, any time of the day.
Not only is avocado filling but it is a good source of vitamins, has a high content of healthy fats, fibre, and can improve digestion and overall wellbeing. The NHS states: “Avocado is rich in unsaturated fats. Spread it on toast, put it in a sandwich or mash it into a delicious dip. Half an avocado counts as 1 of your 5 A Day!”
However, the fruit does have a downside. Because you have to cut it in half to see what the inside looks like, when you pick up an avocado in a supermarket, it can be hard to tell if it is ripe or not until after you buy it.
If you give it a gentle squeeze you can likely feel if it is soft, but this often means the fruit needs to be eaten within the next day or two; once an avocado is ripe, you have a narrow window of time before the fruit starts to spoil.
If the avocado is very firm and does not give at all, it is underripe. But there is a way that you can stock up on hard avocados without having to worry about them going off or not being soft enough to serve up.
Lifestyle and wellness page, Pure Wow, recently shared a simple and quick method for ripening your avocados. On Instagram a video demonstration of the hack was shared, and Pure Wow said: ” Avocado not ripe yet? Soften it up by wrapping it in foil and soaking it in warm water for just 5 minutes. Voilà!”
All you need to do is wrap your avocado in tin foil – and if you have multiple, wrap each one individually – and place into a large bowl. Then add some warm – not hot – water into the bowl until the tin foiled avocado is more-or-less covered. Leave for five minutes.
After five minutes, unwrap the tin foil and slice open your avocado. Squeeze each half and your avocado should come out super soft – and ready to spread.
“Oh my God,” said one shocked individual after seeing the hack. One other wrote: “I’m deeming this a sign from the universe to make guac tonight.”
“This is new knowledge to me,” added one other. “Oh, thanks for sharing this,” said another stunned avocado fan.
“Or just microwave it for 30 seconds,” suggested another. But some other noted: “I assume that doesn’t mean it’ll actually taste ripe though right?”
One individual responded to the comment and said: “The taste is pretty much the same its the texture thatll be a bit different like unripe is probably still gonna be a bit harder then a ripe one.”
