Jones’ comments sparked outrage after he took aim at Djokovic during a live broadcast on Friday. While standing in front of a group of fans waving Serbian flags and singing, he joined in with his own taunting jingle.
“Novak, he’s overrated! Novak’s a has-been! Novak, kick him out,” Jones sang. The world No. 7 responded by refusing to give his on-court interview on Sunday.
Djokovic received support for taking a stand, as Jannik Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill – who hails from Australia and also works in the media – defended the Serb. Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka also backed him up while the Australian Prime Minister waded in.
Although the saga seems to have blown over after Djokovic acknowledged the apologies, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Tennis Australia and Nine put “additional safety arrangements” in place at Melbourne Park.
