Austin Wells found himself at the plate — while being a Yankees stalwart behind it

SAN DIEGO — Now that he has survived and made it through the other side, Austin Wells can be blunt.

The Yankees catcher’s first three-plus months of the season, when he was batting just .148 with a .468 OPS through 62 games?

“Definitely the worst stretch I’ve had ever, probably, in my life,” he said late Wednesday night.

For as lost as Wells looked at the plate for the first half of the season, which forced the Yankees to try (unsuccessfully) to acquire a catcher at the trade deadline, he appears to have finally found himself in time for the homestretch.
