A major supermarket chain is set to open 20 more stores across the UK to rival Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Asda is rolling out its plan to open Express stores nationwide. It marks the continued expansion into convenience formats for Asda, as it looks to rival the likes of Sainsbury’s and Tesco, which have operated smaller stores across the UK for years.
The supermarket giant confirmed earlier this year that it would resume its plans to open 20 more convenience stores this year, as it looks to expand its footprint in locations where it has typically had a limited presence. These areas include high-footfall urban areas, residential locations, and transport hubs. Asda’s Express stores typically stock a total of 3,000 products, including major brands on own-label items, while customers can also complete a quick ‘top up shop’ or a lunch-on-the-go. Customers will also find a range of services, including a Costa Coffee machine, which is ideal for commuters, alongside an ATM and an Amazon Collections & Returns facility. Shoppers can even have their groceries delivered from the Express stores through delivery services including Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat.
This comes after Asda introduced new tech to 250 of its Express stores, with the new electronic labels able to offer real-time updates of prices and product information, while also displaying QR codes for allergen and product information.
The supermarket initially began its journey into a convenience format in 2022, with the ‘Big Four’ grocer confirming there is a “strong pipeline” of new stores for 2026, as it continues its commitment to great value and prices.
Commenting on one store opening, Joseph Sutton, Vice President Asda Express, food service and fuel, said: “We’re delighted to have opened the doors today in Castleford, marking the start of our Express store rollout as we bring Asda’s unbeatable value to new communities across the UK.
“From top-up essentials to convenient food-on-the-go options, we’re excited to welcome new customers and offer outstanding value.”
