A major UK supermarket has reintroduced a much-loved product to its meal deal. Shoppers at Asda discovered White Maltesers are now included in the money-saving deal, even though they were discontinued in 2014.
The chocolate snack gained such a loyal following that a petition was even launched to try and see its return in 2017. However, some retailers are selling the classic once again, including Iceland. One shopper’s post raked up hundreds of likes and comments after they shared their Asda discovery online.
They enthused: “White Chocolate Maltesers now part of the meal deal options at Asda!”. One user responded: “I’m glad they’re back.” A second added :”Me wants.”
ASDA’s meal deal works slightly differently to other supermarkets, as it doesn’t have a set price for a main, snack, and drink. Instead, shoppers choose three eligible items, and the cheapest is free, so they can expect to pay around £3-5 for their lunch.
White Maltesers have also been spotted in other supermarkets, including Iceland, which sells the treat in family-size bags. The moreish snack was originally launched in 2003 as a seasonal product, but due to its popularity, it was made a year-round product.
It is a similar story to the MaltEaster Bunny, which Mars launched in 2009 as a seasonal Easter product. Shoppers went crazy for the delicious malted snack, and it was adapted to various holidays, including Christmas, to meet the demand.
However, White Maltesers didn’t have as much long-term success, and they were reportedly discontinued due to low sales in 2014.
Many chocolate lovers were sad to see the sweet treat disappear, with only a few chocolate bars on the market offering white chocolate versions.
In 2017, a petition was even launched to bring them back, however, as of July 23, it only had 1,681 signatures for its goal of 2,500.
