Arsenal have expressed their ‘devastation’ at the news of former star Billy Vigar’s tragic death. The 21-year-old was involved in a shocking incident over the weekend as he crashed into a hard pitch-side surface when playing for Chichester City.

He was given treatment by an ambulance team and was then rushed to hospital via helicopter for further treatment. Vigar was put into an induced coma and underwent surgery. But unfortunately, he failed to recover and has heartbreakingly succumbed in his injuries.

A statement from Chichester on Thursday read: “It is with great sadness that Chichester City Football Club has to confirm the passing of Billy Vigar. Below is a statement from his family. We request that his family’s privacy is respected at this most difficult time.”

A further statement from Vigar’s family read: “After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday (25th) morning.

“The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”

Arsenal have since offered a touching tribute to the Hale End academy graduate. A message from the North London side read: “Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that former academy graduate Billy Vigar has passed away.

“All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time. Rest in peace, Billy.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Charlie Patino also had a simple message. He said: “Rest in peace, Billy.”

Arsenal were not the only ones to express their condolences. The Football Association (FA) also reacted to the talented footballer’s devastating death.

Their statement read: “We are devastated to hear that Billy Vigar has passed away. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, and everyone at Chichester City FC at this incredibly difficult time.”

A number of Premier League sides also offered their messages of support. Brighton & Hove Albion were among those to pay tribute, posting: “The thoughts of everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion are with Billy’s family and friends, and everyone at Chichester City, at this heartbreaking time,” a message from Brighton read. “Rest in peace, Billy.”

Fulham also shared a tribute, saying: “This is such devastating news. Sending love and strength to Billy’s friends and family, as well as everyone at Chichester City. Rest in peace.”

Chichester were set to play Lewes this weekend in the league. That game was postponed ahead of the sad confirmation of Vigar’s death.
