In what was a cagey encounter, it was Liverpool who walk away with all three points thanks to a wonder free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai in the 83rd minute.
The Reds lead the way heading into the first international break of the season, picking up a maximum nine points from their opening three matches. But the Gunners will need to lick their wounds before they go again once the Premier League resumes.
Here, Express Sport runs the rule over the Arsenal players at Anfield on what was a disappointing afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s men…
Arsenal player ratings
David Raya – 5
For his top standards, was unusually shaky on the ball and his wayward pass to Zubimendi nearly led to a Liverpool goal in the first half when the Gunners had the game under control.
Jurrien Timber – 6
Another very solid defensive display from Timber against the lively Cody Gakpo. Also offered his support to Noni Madueke going forward.
Cristhian Mosquera – 6
Not the game you want to get introduced into inside the first five minutes. But the Arsenal new boy handled the atmosphere and the game-state excellently.
Gabriel Magalhaes – 6
As usual, as solid as ever despite his fellow centre-back stalwart going off with an early injury. Led the defensive line well yet again and Mikel Arteta will need him to stay fit considering Saliba’s injury.
Ricciardo Calafiori – 7
Arguably his best defensive display in an Arsenal shirt and kept Mohamed Salah quiet throughout the match. He’s making it very tough for Arteta to be tempted to play Myles Lewis-Skelly instead.
Declan Rice – 6
Mr Consistent can have no regrets. Broke up Liverpool’s attacks in the final third brilliantly and his workhorse nature ensured his opponents had little time to compose themselves on the ball.
Martin Zubimendi – 5
A fairly quiet afternoon for the Spanish midfielder in what proved to be a tough battle in the middle of the pitch.
Mikel Merino – 6
A bold choice from Arteta to start Merino in midfield. But his presence gave the Gunners control in the middle of the pitch, albeit it meant they missed some creativity from the likes of Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze.
Noni Madueke – 7
Alongside Calafiori, he was Arsenal’s best player at Anfield. He gave Milos Kerkez a tough time down the right hand side and helped out Timber defensively when he was needed.
Gabriel Martinelli – 4
Another very disappointing day at the office for Martinelli, and yet again showed little composure going forward. Had the chance on the counter-attack early on but failed to look up and find Viktor Gyokeres running in behind the Liverpool defence.
Viktor Gyokeres – 5
A very quiet afternoon for the Swedish striker, with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk locking him down well.
