Argentine President Javier Milei claims Falklands future 'could be discussed' with UK

Argentina’s president Javier Milei has claimed the future of the Falklands could be discussed with the UK.

It came after he met Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Argentine leader has suggested a Hong Kong-style agreement which would see the UK hand sovereignty of the islands in the South Atlantic to Buenos Aires.

He said the Foreign Secretary and his Argentine counterpart would “move forward in finding a solution” to the dispute over the islands.

Lord Cameron said the pair discussed “building cooperation on trade and combating global threats” and there was much the nations could achieve together.

But he made no mention of the Falklands and the UK’s position is sovereignty will not change. The Falklands war in 1982 saw Argentina fail in its bid to take the territory 300 miles off its mainland.
