Apple crumble is a popular dessert that many Brits love. The sweet dish can easily be made with a few ingredients, including apples, sugar, flour and butter. An Apple crumble can be bought ready-made from the supermarket, but many enjoy taking the time to prepare it, and would agree that there’s nothing quite like one that’s made fresh at home.
You can add so much to an apple crumble to give the sweet treat a twist and test out new flavours, though it appears that one common ingredient makes it extra special.
A user on Reddit asked home bakers what they add to their apple crisps to elevate them. Apple crisp is the American version of an apple crumble. Out of the many recommendations, there was one that stuck out, and it was ginger.
One person wrote: “Ginger! I have ginger three ways at home, and the roasted ground ginger makes apple desserts really special without the spicy heat that normal ground ginger brings.”
And other users chimed in and agreed with combining the spice into the loved dessert.
Maleficent_Froyo7336 added: “Oh I love to add ginger to my stewed apples. The flavours really work well together so I see how this makes sense!”
While Rogerdaltry said: “I was running to the comments to say ginger too. I recently made apple cinnamon scones and the addition of ginger just gave them the loveliest flavour!”
The next question is where to add the ginger —in the filling or the crumble? Well, according to the first Reddit baker who recommended the ingredient, ginger goes in both.
They also suggested trying a roasted kind of ginger as it provides a “more subtle and savoury” layer when used alongside regular ginger.
Another user, wondered if ginger grated with a microplane would work. It would — but bakers should remember that this method adds more heat than powdered or roasted ginger.
While ginger will give your apple crumble a delicious taste boost, be cautious as too much can “overpower” the other flavours.
