Apple users have been urged to disable three default settings on their iPhones to prevent hackers from accessing their personal data. Tech experts warn that leaving automatic Wi-Fi, location services, and tracking enabled at all times could leave users vulnerable to cybercriminals who exploit these settings to steal sensitive information.
Keeping the Wi-Fi setting on may seem harmless, but iPhones constantly search for available networks when no connection is active. If an unsecured or malicious hotspot is detected, the device may automatically connect, even without the user’s consent.
This opens the door to a cyberattack known as an ‘evil twin’ attack, where hackers create rogue Wi-Fi networks that mimic legitimate ones.
Once connected to a hacker’s network, users unknowingly expose their personal information, including social security numbers, credit card details, and login credentials, which can then be used for identity theft or financial fraud.
Many iPhone apps continuously track users’ locations, often without their knowledge.
While some apps, such as Maps and Weather, require location access to function properly, others may collect and store unnecessary location data, putting users at risk.
To manage location settings, users should open the Settings app, navigate to Privacy & Security, select Location Services, and adjust permissions. Essential apps should be set to ‘While Using,’ while apps that do not require location access should be set to ‘Never.’
Limiting location tracking can prevent unauthorized access to personal whereabouts and reduce the risk of physical and digital threats.
Many apps track user activity across multiple platforms to create targeted advertisements or sell behavioural data to third parties. Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency to give users control over this practice, allowing them to see which apps collect their data.
To disable app tracking, users should open the Settings app, tap Privacy & Security, select Tracking, and toggle off the option labelled “Allow Apps to Request to Track.” This setting prevents apps from gathering data linked to user identities, enhancing privacy and security.
By disabling automatic Wi-Fi, restricting location services, and turning off app tracking, iPhone users can significantly reduce the risk of cyber threats.
These simple adjustments make it harder for hackers to exploit security loopholes and safeguard personal data from unauthorized access, identity theft, and financial fraud.
