Air fryers are convenient and cost-efficient, two qualities that have turned them into a staple on countless countertops across the UK. However, this fan-favourite kitchen appliance carries hidden dangers that many unknowingly ignore.
Fire services are sounding the alarm over a surge in kitchen fires linked to improper air fryer use. From overcrowded baskets to appliances placed too close to flammable materials, simple mistakes are proving costly. With the average insurance claim for air fryer-related fires now topping £29,000 — and some as high as £80,000 — it’s a reminder that these handy devices can have big consequences.
Despite their growing popularity, understanding of safe use hasn’t kept pace.
In fact, a staggering 68% of UK adults now own an air fryer, yet almost one in five have already faced a fire risk related to theirs.
Fire safety specialist Jonny Smith from Crusader Fire explained: “Air fryers are pretty straightforward to use, and this one little fact is what puts off most owners from reading the instruction manual before using.”
According to a survey by Aviva, fire-related issues tied to air fryers — from overheating to full-blown fires — are becoming alarmingly common.
But what’s even more concerning is that many of these incidents could have been prevented with just a little more awareness.
Jonny stressed: “There are a lot of precautions to take when it comes to putting your air fryer to use, such as never using oil and making sure that when you are using it, there is enough ventilation to keep the system from overheating and sparking flames.”
With this in mind, owners are strongly urged to follow two key precautions above all else: never overcrowd the basket and always ensure proper ventilation.
These simple steps can dramatically reduce the risk of a fire starting in your kitchen.
Combined with regular cleaning and careful placement, they are at the core of safe air fryer usage guidance. It could mean the difference between a quick dinner and a dangerous disaster.
