There’s no time like the present to get your garden into good shape for the warmer months. As winter fades and the first signs of spring emerge, March is the perfect time to return to the garden.

With longer days and milder temperatures, this month offers a crucial window to prepare your plants, soil, and outdoor space for the growing season ahead. Tackling key gardening tasks now can set you up for a thriving and vibrant garden in the months to come. According to one woman, who goes by the name of @lookinsidemygarden on TikTok, March is the best time to paint your fences and jet wash items which need cleaning in your garden.

These two tasks will get your garden looking fresh before the summer and can create a total transformation.

Painting your fences will help your garden have a well-maintained look and it will tie together everything else in your outdoor space.

The cooler, drier spring weather of March means you’ll have ideal conditions for paint or stain to dry properly without the intense summer heat causing it to dry too quickly and crack.

It also helps protect the wood from spring rain and UV damage, extending the lifespan of your fence while giving your garden a fresh, well-maintained look before summer.

Another important job to do now is jetwashing, which can be a time-consuming process, but it’s not one without reward.

It can be satisfying to see your garden look like it has brand new slabs and especially if they were originally of a lighter stone colour, they may have become dark and covered in moss over time.

Jet washing slabs is great for removing dirt, grime and algae, which will restore their original color while also preventing slippery surfaces.

It can help extend the slabs’ lifespan by preventing organic buildup and improving drainage, reducing the risk of water pooling.

By completing this simple job, you can make your outdoor space look cleaner and more attractive.

Other jobs which the woman recommends doing this month include growing plants from seed – some of which are best to plant now.

She also recommends dividing and taking cuttings of plants you already have.
