With summer in full force, ants and other pests are in search of food and shelter, meaning many households may see the pests within their home. However, before calling in expensive pest control, an expert has shared a simple, budget-friendly solution. Chris Hutton, owner of Adams Self Store, has shared an effective hack to keep ants out of the home using just two common household ingredients.
The expert said: “You might think an ant or two might not be a problem, but they will quickly alert their friends that your home is the place to be. Before you know it, you could have a whole colony living in your kitchen.
“Killing them when you see them isn’t sufficient; you need to kill the nest or warn the scouting ants to avoid your home.”
The expert’s simple solution ensures ants who make it back to the nest take the poison with them, ensuring they do not want to return.
Chris recommended using sugar and baking powder, two essential ingredients you probably already have in your home.
He added: “Simply mix one part baking powder and one part icing sugar in a bowl, ensuring they’re fully mixed.
“Sprinkle it around potential trails and near entry points and wait for the magic to happen.”
If you don’t already own it, a 500g bag of icing sugar costs around 90p, and 170g of baking powder will cost just 65p.
You’ll only need 5g of each, costing just 3p in total, according to the expert. Chris noted: “Be patient, this isn’t an instant solution, so it will take three days for their numbers to decrease.
“Ensure to keep topping the mixture up when the levels go down.” It’s also important to prevent ants before they become a problem.
This includes maintaining cleanliness around the home, reducing clutter so they have nowhere to hide, and sealing entry points.
