Another major UK airport scraps 100ml liquid restriction in win for British holidaymakers

Yet another UK airport has announced it is scrapping a limit on the amount of liquid passengers can travel with as it plans a rollout of new security equipment.

London Luton Airport is preparing to install new high-tech scanners which will remove the need for passengers to bag up 100ml of liquids by June.

The airport is the third UK terminus to announce it is introducing the new CT scanners after London City Airport became the first to get rid of the liquid limit last year.

Since then Heathrow has announced its new scanning equipment will be in operation from the summer in a move which will make security checks faster and more stress-free for travellers.

It comes after the Department for Transport set a target date of June 2024 for all airports to install the new equipment, but Gatwick and Stansted are expected to miss the deadline.

A London Luton Airport spokesman said: “Here at London Luton airport, we’re on track to switch over to the new scanners by June, in line with government guidance.

“However, until they are fully operational you will have to follow current security rules.”

CT scanners are already in use at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Announcing the scrapping of restrictions, transport secretary Mark Carney said the move would spell the end for tiny toiletries.

He said: “The tiny toiletry has become a staple of airport security checkpoints, but that’s all set to change.

“I’m streamlining cabin bag rules at airports while enhancing security.

“By 2024, major airports across the UK will have the latest security tech installed, reducing queuing times, improving the passenger experience, and most importantly detecting potential threats.”

Restrictions on the size of liquids were put into place in 2006 after a terror attack using liquid explosives was thwarted at Heathrow.
