American tourist warns everyone not to wear one item in UK | UK | News

An US tourist has issued advise to his fellow Americans visiting the UK – including one item of clothing not to wear in a major city.

On his Youtube channel, Wolters World, the tourist advises his countrymen to visit areas of the country beyond just London – recommending destinations including Liverpool, York and Chester.

However, he advises people travelling to Merseyside to avoid wearing a Manchester United replica kit.

He said: “I think a lot of tourists think ‘oh, I’m gonnna go to England, I’m going to get a new t-shirt, a new jersey for my favourite team’ for Manchester or Liverpool or Chelsea and they’re just going to wear it out when they go to the pub or around and see the sights.

“And I think that’s a mistake that tourists make because most of the time it doesn’t matter, people don’t really care – but if it’s like a game day or people are getting a little bit too exuberant or the lads have had too many drinks that can be something you want to think about.

“So get your jersey while you’re here and if you’re going to the game go ahead and wear it, but if you’re not save it until you get home.”

On football, he also notes how people feel England ‘should win every soccer tournament ever’ – but then turn on the team the second they are knocked out of a tournament.

He added: “If things go wrong and they miss a penalty kick or sky it over the bar, people really turn on the team – ‘oh, the manager needs to go, we need someone else here, this team is horrible’…

“It’s just crazy how they can be so happy and so ‘YES, ENGLAND’ but at the same time go ‘UH, I hate them!’. It’s one of those things tourists can’t really understand – and don’t make the mistake of trying to understand, because you can’t.”

Other tips he gives to fellow US travellers include making sure to respect queueing culture, understanding the differences between England, Scotland and Wales and making sure to enjoy the countryside beyond the cities.

He also advises Americans that it does not rain constantly in Britain, that what rain there is is rarely torrential and that some coins – such as £1 and £2 coins – can be used to buy items and are worth more than coins generally are in the US.
