Ally McCoist opens up on Steven Gerrard ‘phone call’ after rejecting Rangers job | Football | Sport

Ally McCoist seems to be adopting a ‘laugh or cry’ attitude towards the current situation at Rangers. The club’s recent attempt to lure Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox fell flat over the weekend, as the Liverpool icon withdrew his name from the hat. The man responsible for delivering the club’s last Scottish Premiership title doesn’t believe it’s the right time for a second stint, mirroring his sentiments from the summer.

With just five days until the Glasgow giants face Dundee United in their Premiership return, Andrew Cavenagh is keen to see a new face in the dugout. Danny Rohl is currently leading the pack with several other contenders also in the running. The international break has provided some relief for fans following recent lacklustre performances.

However, as McCoist disclosed, even a weekend without a match was no guarantee of enjoyment for the Bears.

Speaking to host Jeff Stelling on talkSPORT, he said: “Do you know something? My mate phoned me on Saturday and he said: ‘Rangers aren’t even playing and they’re still spoiling my Saturday’.

“I think Stevie Gerrard pulled out at about seven o’clock, out of the manager’s race for the position. I said I fancied it to be his if he wanted it and he could get some arrangements and things like that, obviously.

“He had one or two things to iron out but sadly, that wasn’t the case. And that was it, we’re still on the hunt.

“It looks likely to be Danny Rohl but there’s one or two other boys. Michael Carrick’s come into the frame. The two of us, we’re in a bit of a state, aren’t we?”

It comes after Gerrard broke his silence on social media for the first time since rejecting the chance to return to Ibrox.

He posted a message to congratulate former Rangers colleague Ross Wilson, who has been appointed by Newcastle as their new sporting director.

On his Instagram story, Gerrard wrote: “Congratulations @ross_wilson7. Great club for you, best of luck mate.”

It remains to be seen who Rangers will appoint as their next permanent manager, with Gerrard no longer in the running.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has been tentatively linked with the Ibrox role but Rohl appears to be the firm favourite as things stand.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is also rumoured to be a candidate but it seems unlikely that he will be leaving Portman Road any time soon.
