Despite millions of people still using Windows 10, it seems Microsoft isn’t changing its mind about ending all support later this year. In fact, a new post on the US firm’s website is now telling those still using this ageing operating system to switch to Windows 11 “immediately”. That urgent alert has been issued due to the rise in security threats targeting older Windows 10 PCs.
Online attacks being forced on ageing devices is probably no surprise, as it’s likely that more cyber criminals will try to cash in once Microsoft stops releasing important updates in October.
“Well, it is official. Window 10 is being retired after October 14th, 2025 and will no longer be supported,” said Microsoft’s Margaret Farmer in a new blog post.
“Your computer will still work. However, with security threats on the rise, it is imperative you upgrade, immediately.”
If your PC has the correct system requirements, you can move to Windows 11 for free – although Microsoft says this offer is only available for a “limited time”. If you can’t update to this latest OS due to the age of your current laptop then you do still have some options.
Firstly, you can simply pop to the shops and buy yourself a new device. If that sounds too much hassle and expense then there’s the option to enroll in the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) Programme.
There is a yearly fee for this service and you won’t get any new features but it will keep your device safe from cyber threats.
“For the first time ever, we’re introducing an ESU program for personal use as well,” Microsoft explained.
“The ESU program for consumers will be a one-year option available for $30. Program enrollment will be available closer to the end of support in 2025.”
Finally, you can do nothing. Windows 10 won’t stop working after October but your devices will become more prone to attacks and bugs as Microsoft says no new patches will be released.

• First check to see if your device meets the minimum criteria for upgrading your device by navigating to Microsoft’s website.
• After ensuring your device meets the minimum requirements, navigate to your Desktop taskbar. In the search bar, type and select “Settings.”
• From the menu, click “Privacy and Security,” then select “Windows Update.”
• click download and install the windows update.
• You will need to reboot your computer. The update can take a while to prepare your device. Do not turn off your computer during the update. Doing so can cause harm to your computer.
