People don’t like to think about rats, but the pesky creatures can easily find their way into our homes. They can squeeze into all sorts of gaps and holes, which is why it’s so important to make regular property checks.
This summer all homeowners are being urged to make a simple check now to reduce the risk of them infiltrating homes. If you want to keep your property safe, clean and rat-free, then you may want to take the time to complete the task, as it doesn’t take long at all and could make a really big difference in the long-run.
While homing things in your garden can attract rats, they also seek shelter indoors too. As well as making sure your home is as secure as possible, you may also want to check what you have outside.
In a recent video, a pest control expert from Triumph Pest Control said: “Be proactive about preventing rats getting into your attic space, or anywhere into your property. Believe it or not, now is the time – summertime – to be proactive.
“Go around the outside of your property, check for any gaps or holes where rats can get through the tiniest of gaps. Around your electrical boxes, around any old vents – you might have some plastic vents or broken old vents where rats can get in.”
He added: “Have a check around there. If you’ve got any bushes up against the wall – you know, places where rats will get in. You might have an old vent pipe, you might have an old washing machine.
“Any gaps – have a look around. Walk around. Have a five minute walk-around and then you can get repairs done. That’s being proactive.”
Another thing he said you need to be aware of is having bird feeders in your garden. He says these can often attract rats and encourage nests to develop nearby.
When the winter comes, and the weather gets colder, they’ll then try and get in. In other words, taking steps to prevent this now will really help.
He noted pest control services always get a lot of calls during the winter when rats try and get into people’s properties, so it’s best to get ahead of the game now.
How to prevent rats
To try and stop rats from making their way inside, you need to block entry points, rid food and water sources and reduce any potential hiding places. Once you’ve examined your property for cracks, holes or gaps, you can work to fill them in.
It will depend on the area you’re working with, but materials people commonly use to do this include caulk, steel wool, hardware cloth or cement. Just do your research to work out which option may be best for you.
As well as holes and gaps, it’s also wise to ensure external vents are covered to limit the chance of the pests getting inside. As for doors, check if they have gaps under 5mm and seal them accordingly.
You could also trim any branches that touch your roof or gutters, as rats can actually climb trees and get onto the roof. Making it hard for them to do this will aid matters.
If you’re ever concerned that you have rats, make sure you contact a pest control expert for advice. It’s crucial to seek professional help when needed.
