Alexander Isak left embarrassed but Liverpool will secretly be relieved | Football | Sport

Sweden’s dreams of playing at next year’s World Cup are hanging by a thread after a devastating home defeat to Kosovo, leaving Alexander Isak’s side on the brink of elimination. Following a previous loss to Switzerland, they desperately needed a win to keep their hopes alive for a top-two finish. Kosovo had already triumphed over Sweden in last month’s international break and had the chance to extend their lead by six points with another victory, which they duly achieved.

The result leaves Sweden teetering on the edge with just one point, needing two wins to maintain any slim hopes of qualifying for the tournament in the United States. They also require Slovenia to drop points in November, but not against Kosovo, making their progression highly unlikely. Fisnik Asllani’s winner proved decisive, with Kosovo successfully fending off a late barrage of attempts and corners. Over half of Sweden’s total 13 shots on Monday evening came from Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal’s star player had one close-range shot saved and another narrowly missed the target. Isak, meanwhile, fired an impressive six attempts on goal with two hitting the target.

Isak’s best chance came just under 15 minutes from time, but he squandered a golden opportunity, firing wide from about 10 yards out following a superb cross from Gustaf Lagerbielke.

Liverpool might be quietly relieved that Sweden are unlikely to qualify for the World Cup in spite of Isak’s embarrassment.

After a summer marred by his transfer saga, it’s understandable that some fans are happy that he may have an extended break.

“I for one am happy Sweden won’t qualify for the World Cup. Full rest and pre-season for Isak next summer should makeup for the disgusting way Newcastle treated him this summer,” stated @total_slotball.

However, not all fans share this sentiment. @Opresii expressed: “No World Cup for ISAK [crying animal gif].”

Gyokeres bore the brunt of the criticism on social media following Sweden’s defeat, with @Emzyl_ writing: “Gyokeres is awful and literally offers nothing whatsoever. It’s almost like playing with 10 men.”

@Kvvazii added: “Watching Gyokeres right now and he’s actually making me count the days of Havertz’s return ffs.”

Both Gyokeres and Isak have had shaky starts to the season at their new clubs. The former will be hoping to end an eight-game goal drought against Fulham this Saturday.

As for Isak, he will be aiming to guide Liverpool to their first win in three against Manchester United the following day.
