Air India flight 171 from Ahmedabad, India, to London, UK, crashed today just moments after takeoff with 244 people on board, including 53 Brits. Air India said in a statement: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.” The plane was bound for London Gatwick.
The UK government has vowed to provide all the support it can to those on the Air India flight, Commons Leader Lucy Powell said. Aviation experts Flightradar24 said the plane was just a few hundred feet above the airport when it started to rapidly go down. More information is yet to be released regarding casualties and injuries, but at least 110 are confirmed dead according to early reports. There have been a number of plane crashes in 2025 that have resulted in the deaths of passengers and/or flight crew.
The Air India pilot cited “engine failure” in an air traffic control mayday call before crashing, according to a local source. The plane “crashed into doctors’ hostel” and “within 2-3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot.”
“Almost 70-80 % of the area has been cleaned,” a senior police officer in Ahmedabad, Gujarat said.
