For travellers seeking the ultimate island escape, the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique has just been crowned the best island destination in Africa and the Indian Ocean, outranking even the Maldives.

Named the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” this breathtaking chain of six islands — Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, Bangue, and Shell, offers untouched natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and year-round warm temperatures.

With February highs reaching 30°C and pristine white sands, it’s no surprise that Bazaruto has been hailed as better than the Maldives by Conde Nast traveler.

Unlike other tropical destinations that have been heavily developed, Bazaruto remains largely untouched.

The entire archipelago is a protected conservation area and national park, ensuring that its natural beauty and marine biodiversity remain pristine.

It is one of the few places in the world where visitors can spot the endangered dugong, a gentle sea creature that was once mistaken for mermaids by sailors.

The archipelago is also home to vibrant coral reefs, whale sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles, making it a dream destination for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.

Luxury resorts have only recently begun to appear in the area, with andBeyond Benguerra Island, which opened in 2015, offering an ultra-exclusive retreat for those looking to experience paradise in style.

With luxurious overwater bungalows, private beaches, and world-class hospitality, Bazaruto combines untouched wilderness with high-end comfort.

Reaching this secluded paradise requires a bit of effort, adding to its exclusivity.

Travellers must first fly into Vilanculos, a coastal town in Mozambique, before taking a short seaplane transfer to their final destination. The extra journey is well worth it, as visitors are greeted with untouched beaches, turquoise waters, and a tranquil escape from the crowds.

While Bazaruto itself is a peaceful haven, Mozambique has certain regions with travel advisories due to security concerns.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all travel to specific districts in Cabo Delgado Province and all but essential travel to other areas in Cabo Delgado and Nampula Provinces due to security risks.

Travellers are urged to check official travel guidance before planning their trip, as travel insurance may be invalidated if visiting restricted areas.

In addition, recent unrest following the national elections in October 2024 has led to sporadic protests, particularly at road toll gates.

While the situation has improved since December, travellers should stay informed, avoid large gatherings, and take precautions, such as avoiding travel after dark.

Despite these considerations, Bazaruto remains a safe and breathtaking destination for those venturing beyond.
